All Things Atlas Historical Center, Inc.

Dedicated to the History of the SM-65 Atlas ICBM Missile System

ORGANIZATION  PURPOSE

The All Things Atlas Historical Center, Inc. is dedicated to preserving the history of the SM-65 Atlas Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile System and those who served in, supported and helped to maintain the missile sites of the thirteen squadrons which deployed this first generation ICBM in operational launch facilities. The SM-65 missile system was designed and developed by the Astronautics division of General Dynamics Corporation (GD/A). Designated the Atlas, this missile system was America's first Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) and first line of defense against a Cold War Russian nuclear missile attack. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, the Atlas was Americas number one national priority and three different types of Atlas operational ICBM sites were designed and implemented including the Atlas D, Atlas E and Atlas F series launch systems. The Atlas missile was America's first ICBM capable of reaching a target over 6,000 miles away and was a major nuclear deterent during the Cold War and specifically during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

The purpose of the Center is to promote the understanding and education of the general public in the history of the SM-65 Atlas ICBM missile program which was undertaken by the United States Air Force from the late 1950's thru the mid 1960's. The associated websites listed below are intended as a tribute to the hard work and sacrifices that were made in successfully carrying out an extremely complex and very difficult mission. These sites have been established as a source of information for those who are interested in the history of the SM-65 Atlas missile system and the substantial impact that the program had on military and world history and events, including the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Center will acquire, restore, preserve and present for posterity the hardware, artifacts and history of the Atlas ICBM missile system program. Much of the material acquired by the Center is in a digital format. This information will be posted to the web sites associated with the Center in ongoing updates as time allows. A list of new material can be found on the "What's New" page of each web site shown in the list below.
